    • The region of Northern Uganda was ravaged by one of Africa’s longest civil wars until 2006. For over 20 years, more than 65,000 children, some as young as five years old, have been kidnapped by Uganda’s anti-government rebel group, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), and forced to serve as child soldiers and sex slaves. Under the command of LRA leader Joseph Kony, these children have been terrorized into committing the worst atrocities, even killing their own families.     • In late 2006, a Malawian newspaper wrote about William Kamkwmamba, a remarkable young man from a remote rural village north of the capital city. Forced to drop out of high school for lack of money, William saw a picture of a windmill in a textbook and decided to build one to power his family's home. Using found materials and scrapyard parts such as a broken bicycle, tractor fan, melted plastic pipes, bamboo and used copper wires, he built a series of windmills which would change his and his family's life.     • Malaria affects classroom performance

    • Malaria is a huge problem in Kenya and other countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Much research has been devoted to the impact of malaria on children five years and under, but there have been virtually no studies on how the scourge affects school-age children. Research conducted in Kenya and recently published in The Lancet says malarial parasites lead to anemia and absenteeism in school. And that affects children's performance. The study concludes that supplying children with malaria drugs can improve their health and classroom performance.
