HAITI DISASTER - A DIRGE, AN EULOGY, AN ODE, A METAPHOR

January 12, 2010 was the fearful day

Death struck a tiny Island with great assail

A catastrophic earthquake measuring 7.00 in magnitude

The worst the Island has seen since 1770, grossly huge.

Temperature rises, rumblings… tremors… buildings vibrating…

Crash!,Bangs! Dust, Fire, Water, OMG it’s like the world is ending!

Screams… Scrams… Pushing... Shoving…Panic everywhere

A bruttish natural force that respects none reaching  far and near.

Disaster strikes, millions displaced, immediately homeless, roofless

Pandemonium, death, terror, pain, no access, gross abscess

A few minutes of shakes, leaves days, months, and years of the unacceptable

Haitians bemoan their plight; President Preval rendered utterly vulnerable.

What signs were missed? Heat rise? Birds flight? Cock crows turn shriek calls?

Whe’re the Percusor indicators – Thermal, Water, Electromagnetic, Animals?

Why no predictions nor warnings, geologically, spirtitually or simple intuition?

When this monster descended on a country already bereft, in pitiable condition.

Hundreds of thousands perished and buried without dignity

Corpses littered the roads, decaying, stinking, then piled, burnt, what a pity!

Just a handful of proper burials, near dead burying their dead

On a scale and magnitute that is unimaginable and full of dread.

Days on, the survivors hungry, dejected, dehumanised, deranged and derailed

All soon turned into one of looting, shooting, fighting, wailing and wounded

Children shown like caged animals, adults scavenging; apprehension takes over

Soldiers unleashed on these unfortunate degenerates to defuse rising tempers.

Haiti Earthquake despair, also a story of hope, of compassion and of miracles

A strong story of Faith, even in death new lives born quite remarkable

The world rises to assist, aids pouring in, although difficult to gain access

To the needy, the hungry, the dying, the infected, what a mess.

Faith, for many held on to their God, singing in praises and wonderment.

A woman lost her child but still thank God, the unquestionable Omnipotent.

Cathedrals crashed, churches levelled but Faith lingers, for in a worship field,

Many sing, even donating their Haiti little to those with nothing, my eyes tearfilled.

Hope, for sanity, restoration & regeneration as the aid and assistance trickle in

Sniffer dogs, helicopters, ships, food, water, santitation, nurses, doctors, in liaison.

Clinton Bus, Red cross, Save the Children, Madonna, UN, UNICEF, Christian Aid,

Promises of more personal, commmunity, country and international aid.

Compassion, we live in a compasssionate world, so many ready to help

Small or large, money and donations pouring in, organisations and reps

From the four corners of the world contributing and doing their best

Physically, financially, medically, rescuing, saving, burying, all at their nicest.

MIRACLES, many I can cite, even as I write, Miracles happening still

Over a week now, people are being pulled out alive, some well, and some ill

Today a 69year old saved, 8 days without water or food, only prayers to God

Medically impossible, but all things are possible with our Lord God.

Hundreds pulled out from rubbles, covered amidst cheers, with dust & blood

A 2year old, a 16month old, a pregnant woman Janet, her husband never gave up

“Even if I die, I love you” she says, 6 days pinned down under a beam, but saved

Pulled out wincing, a smile, a “Thank You God” & Praise worship as she waved!

A 12 and 17 year old sibling rescued;  a 6 year old saved by a Spanish rescuer

Shaken but a SMILE , horror gone in an instant, when he saw the face of his mother

An elderly pulled out alive 7 days after, & more miracles, many more to happen

Hopeless there’s hope, with faith they survive, as long as they’re not forgotten.

That said friends, Haiti story continues for now a story of Despair

Have many been saved to die, to suffer, to wish for death, no after care?

I see the pain, the horror, the infections, and hear the cries on my TV screen

People who have gone through hell, now starting a second hell lamenting!

Please God have mercy, please God rescue the situation, please please

No one can question God, though thousands to millions dead, missing,  in disease

Millions homeless, millions suffering but I give God the glory, He is the Master

He will show compassion, we should never turn our backs on Him even if we suffer.

Haiti is struck again, 8 days after, with strong 6.1quake aftershock

Causing panic among people still camped in the open, hindering rescue efforts

Many women give birth maybe prematurely, without cover or dignity

To show the shock and despair captured for the news by reporters in the viscinity.

BUT BEWARE HAITI NEEDS HELP, COMPASSION, UNDERSTANDING & KINDNESS

HAITI NEED TO BE SHOWN DIGNITY; DON’T TAKE AWAY THE LITTLE THAT’S LEFT.

DON’T DEHUMANISE THEM FURTHER, COMMUNICATE EVEN WITH THE COMMONEST

GIVE THEM FOOD, NOT TROOPS, WHO NOW BRUTALISE AND SHOW THEM CONTEMPT.

The task is enormous, frustrating, daunting and even near dangerous

Don’t make it an enormity, don’t brutalise, don’t capitalise, don’t occupy

Stop evacuating Haiti posterity to put in institutions, given away to others to adopt

Don’t use aid as a disguise to enforce imperialist occupation, or supremacy.

Haitians are afflicted but not stupid, apprehensive but wise to the antics of others

A woman screams out to the world when stopped from getting to her hungry lass

She asks “What are you whites coming to take over Haiti for?” – don’t blame her

She meant the “whites” no harm, she saw guns and troops before food or water .

HAITI WILL NEED HELP FROM YOU AND I AND THE WHOLE WORLD

TODAY, TOMORROW, FOR YEARS TO COME, I THANK YOU LORD

FOR MAKING SO MANY PEOPLE OF POWER BUT WITH HEARTS, NOT MUTE

TO THE CRIES AND AGONY OF PEOPLE DISPLACED BUT NEEDING THEIR ROOT.

MAKE ME AN INSTRUMENT OF YOUR LOVE AND A MESSANGER OF TRUTH.

  • Sad to say that good things come to an end someday. I am referring to the rescue effort which has now officially been called off. The last person saved was a 23 year old who survived 11 days. He even pleaded that the rescue effort is not called off...

We thank God for little mercies and beg for mercy (amen).

    Yes, you are right,

Haitians are afflicted but not stupid, apprehensive but wise to the antics of others...

I'm sure that even Wechuge was only hitting out because of his knowledge, and feelings of impotence and outrage, which is what we all do in situations like these; take a look at his "commondreams" links; from this we can see that he has a loving heart also.

And make US instruments of God's Peace (Love and Truth) - for "it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life."
